Desert Crown Theater Company is the formulation of five women, all residents of Vail, whose vision is to provide the community a theater close to home, participated in and enjoyed by all ages, that will someday become a staple and legacy for the Vail area. The theater is entirely volunteer-run, with the ongoing operations overseen by an elected board of directors. Desert Crown Theater Company is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and depends on the support of Vail’s local businesses and residents.

Most recently, a Jr. production summer camp was held for Vail’s youngest community members. The camp, which ran for two weeks in June 2022, offered insight into the theater audition and production process, with the opportunity for attendees to develop stage presence, as well as learn the duties of a backstage crew. The skills acquired ultimately culminated into a participant-run, on-stage production of an original adaptation of Alice in wonderland, written by Desert Crown’s Caitlyn Drake, and directed by Christine Ralston. The camp participants also joined video calls with guest speakers who work in the performing arts field, including a lead performer in a current New York Broadway show, as well as crew members from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s motion capture team, and credits with the Hallmark Channel. The company looks forward to its second youth camp and production coming in summer of 2023.

This December, Desert Crown Theater Company is pleased to bring to Vail its second annual production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, adapted for the stage by James Hutchison and directed by Caitlyn Drake. With limited funds, last year’s production was held in an outdoor setting. Audience members snuggled up with hot cocoa and cookies which turned out to be quite a magical, immersive holiday experience. This year’s production will bring the same magic and charm to an indoor stage.
