Maya Schonbrun, 17 years old, of Vail, Arizona was selected to compete in the Prix de Lausanne ballet competition in Montreux, Switzerland at the end of this month. The Prix de Lausanne is an extremely prestigious competition often characterized as the Olympics of ballet. This year’s candidates were selected by an international panel of jurors who selected 81 candidates worldwide, representing 39 different countries. There are only 14 young men and women representing the United States in the competition. Maya began taking dance classes with Studio One Arizona Dance Company in Vail, Arizona when she was three years old. She danced with Studio One’s competition team under owner Rachael Reyes until the age of 12 when she was accepted into the pre- professional ballet program at Master Ballet Academy in Scottsdale.

She has trained there for the past five years under the direction of Slawomir and Irena Wozniak. Mr. Wozniak stated “I am so happy Maya is one of few selected dancers for the Prix de Lausanne. It is already privilege and honor just to be part of the competition and we are happy that she will represent us well.”

Maya is a 4-time regional winner of the Youth American Grand Prix ballet competition 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. She received the Rising Star ballet award at the Beijing International Ballet Competition in 2019 and was the Gold Medalist for the 2021 World Ballet Competition
