Mother’s Day is traditionally the time we celebrate our mother’s role in our lives. All they have done and do for us; all that they taught us that we share with others. But for some, this day is a reminder of loss. Some mothers are no longer with us, were never with us, or we wished were never with us. There are many types of moms out there and it benefits you to acknowledge which kind you had.

If your mother has died…
If you have recently lost your mother, take heart, you can still experience her with those who knew her and in your quiet time. For those halted by grief, allow yourself time for healing and ask for assistance. Losing a loved one can change your perspective and throw you off center. Often time is the healer of this wound, but it is important to sort out and discuss your feelings with someone trained to help. You may have unfinished business with your mother that needs to be addressed.
If your mother was not kind…
Yes, we have mothers, but we might not all want to celebrate them. Some had loving, kind mothers and some had abusive, vindictive, neglectful mothers. If you are the latter, this day may bring pain to the surface. It may be triggering; an aggravator of stored memories. Instead of shoving it all down, find a healthy way to process through journaling, meditation or talking. It is a journey worth beginning.
If you never had a mother…
Since you never had a mother or mother figure in your life, this holiday may be painful. Consider taking inventory on those women who did show you what mothers can be like. If you don’t know anyone, do some research about strong female figures or seek a mentor that can guide you along. If you are shut down by the pain of not having a mother in your life, counseling and alternative therapies can assist your healing.
We don’t have to live our lives based on the pain of the past. Everyone deserves to feel at peace. It’s time to enjoy the now and look forward to a brighter future.
