It’s National Donut Day!
Besides having a good excuse to get a sugar high today (scroll down to see where you can get some whoppers of deals in our area!) this day actually has meaning.
National Donut Day was created in 1938 by the Salvation Army as a way to provide comfort to the young soldiers fighting on the front lines. Female Salvation Army officers, Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purveyance, cooked up the one food they could with the ingredients available – donuts.
Now, the day is used as a way to bring awareness for the Salvation Army’s social service programs and critical services offered by this organization to 30 million Americans each year.
Knowing the history will make your donut taste even better, don’t you think?
