Taliyah Henderson, 11 years old, competed in the USATF (USA track and field) regional championships held in Aurora, Colorado, last month. She competes with the Arizona Titans track club and won two gold medals and a bronze medal qualifying her for nationals in North Carolina at the end of July.
In the 400m, she chased down her biggest competition to get the gold and break the Arizona all- time record. Taliyah is recognized as first in the nation as the fastest runner in that event. She now holds the records for both the 400m and 800m races.
Her younger sister, Anniah Henderson, a first grader in Vail, following in her sister’s footsteps, also showed an amazing performance by qualifying for the nationals as a 6 year old running against 8 year olds. Anniah placed 4th in the 400m and 5th in the 200m. Since competitors have to be at least 7 years old to go to nationals, she will be sitting on the sidelines this year, but will be ready for the next one as she has two more years in this age division.
