April 18th marked the beginning of National Volunteer Week, so it was a fitting day for Greater Vail Community Resources to honor the cadre of volunteers who dedicate their time every month to either Resources Vail Food Bank or the Depot Thrift Store. The volunteer appreciation luncheon took place at Christ Lutheran Vail’s beautiful multipurpose room, which was packed full of festooned tables bearing engraved key ring mementos for every guest. Taking charge of the program as master of ceremonies was ReSources General Manager, Jeff Bridge, who doled out lots of raffle prizes and kudos to the hard-working volunteers he has come to know in the last year. He also provided two identical posters, celebrating the five-year anniversary of Resources, and signed by several regional VIP’s. Volunteers were invited to sign the posters which will be framed and displayed in the thrift store and food bank during the coming year.
The program’s highlight was guest speaker, Cal Baker, former superintendent of the Vail Unified School District, who shared a bit of history about the “land between the tracks”, but more importantly, spoke about the profound impact of volunteers on our community and on our society. While sprinkled with humor, his authentic and heartfelt message made a deep impression—one that was affirming and motivating for volunteers and board members alike.
Also on the program was Jill Wells, Family Resource and Community Coordinator with Vail USD, who took a few moments to tell a poignant story about a homeless student in need, and how ReSources Depot Thrift Store came through on short notice to help out. In her view, it exemplified the relationship between ReSources volunteers, the school district and the people that both organizations serve.
And what’s an appreciation luncheon without certificates? Resources Vail Food Bank manager, Liana Hicks, and Depot Thrift Store manager, Leida Robinson, took turns recognizing Lindsay Hester (food bank), Carol Porter (Depot Thrift Store), and Karen Howe (combo for both), for amassing the most volunteer hours. Also receiving certificates were: Hubert James Johnson, Scott Thomas, Mike Polansky, Laura Gile, Jeanne Porter, and Nina Rickle.
