by Post 109 Legionnaire Brad Adams
Arthur McMahon, USMC, Retired, has been a vital force at McCulloch-Wagner, American Legion Post 109 since 1978 when a group of veterans got together and applied for a charter signed by James Byrd, a fellow Marine. The post charter arrived, dated 09 January 1979, which is the Post 109 official birth date. Throughout the years Art has served in numerous post positions and was instrumental in drafting the 109 constitution and bylaws.
The “yard arm” flag pole by the F-4 jet in front of the post was erected during his second term as Post 109 Commander in May of 1998. The flag pole is dedicated to John R. Browning. Furthermore, during this administration, the post sent four boys to Boys State for the first time in Post 109 history. When Art left office in June of 1999, all outstanding mortgages had
been retired and the post had no financial encumbrances. Later, in 2003-2004, the membership re-elected him again as commander. During this time period the USAF F-4E was restored and dedicated to its “Thunderbird” duty scheme of the 70’s, becoming the Post 109 staple, and our area’s “landmark” attraction.
His beautiful wife Junis was involved with the Post 109 auxiliary throughout the early years and is Art’s best friend. This amazing couple has enjoyed 65 years of marriage, and he often refers to her as “My Lill Bride.” She knows how to keep a smile on his face and a song in his heart. Art has held many official, and unofficial duties, in addition he seems to always be available for those seeking counsel. Post 109 appreciates all your contributions over the years Art! Semper Fidelis!
