Access to high-speed reliable broadband services is coming to rural areas of Pima County. Thanks to federal funding from the state, the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) has awarded Cox Communications and Pima County a $5 million grant to support fiber broadband upgrades to the Three Points area west of Tucson and Sycamore Springs in the Sahuarita-Corona de Tucson area. In addition to the $ 5 million awarded by the ACA, Pima County has also provided financial support which will create a public private partnership that combines a commitment of $12.6 million to provide internet for 1,400 underserved residents. Construction will begin soon, with an anticipated completion in 2025.
A recent survey from Cox found that 86% of consumers previously in underserved communities, who recently obtained access to high-speed internet said that internet service improved their lives. Those living in rural areas and/or regions lacking high-speed internet access stated they were often hindered in their economic growth and faced challenges accessing resources, including education and healthcare. Cox is continuing its efforts to broaden high-speed internet availability, with the aim of creating greater opportunities for economic and educational advancement through connectivity.
“This survey shows us that a high-speed internet connection brings optimism and economic prosperity to rural communities,” said Lisa Lovallo, vice president of Cox Communications Southern Arizona Market. “By connecting these households, residents are empowered to learn, increase their earning potential and thrive.”
In the past year, some areas in our district have experienced impacts to their services especially in the Vail area due to vandalism. At those times, the Cox team has quickly responded to address damage, restore services, and Cox’s team remains committed to ensuring that customers have the best experience possible.
