Dear Heather,
With the dog days of summer quickly approaching, I’m dreading the “Mom! I’m bored!” that always accompanies my children’s summer conversations! It seems like I always end up spending a bunch of money to occupy my children. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

Dear Summer Spender,
You are absolutely correct, the long, hot days of summer will be here before we know it! What you are incorrect about is you don’t have to spend a fortune. The local pools, libraries and recreation centers all have low or no cost programs for kids. If your children are 16 or older encourage them to look for a summer job at an establishment near your home. You can have read-a-thon’s, movie marathons, indoor workout sessions, board game days, and craft days in your own home. Coordinate play dates with other families or arrange to meet at a local movie theater on a Tuesday for discount day. Most of all, enjoy the time you have with your children, as it will be gone too soon! Happy summertime!
Heather
