Although our 100° days are behind us, temperatures will still average in the mid 80’s, making it an ideal time to enjoy Tucson area lakes. While there are a number of small lakes in the immediate Tucson area, I am going to focus on two: Parker Canyon and Rose Canyon.
Parker Canyon is the best known, probably because it is large enough to allow boating. Located 29 miles from Sonoita, the lake is open year around for hiking, camping, fishing and boating. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout, but catfish, bass, bullhead and sunfish may also be caught here. Fish from the banks, a pier or launch a boat at their ramp. Day passes are $8. Fishing boat rentals start at $50 for two hours; pedal boats and kayaks are available for $25. Camping fees are $55 per night. The Lakeshore Trail runs about five miles and includes excellent vantage points, some with benches, for watching waterfowl and hummingbirds. Bald eagles, deer and other native animals may also be found.
Rose Canyon Lake is located about 26 miles from Tucson on the road leading to Mount Lemmon. The scenery and views are stunning! Rose Canyon Lake is small, about a mile around, and does not allow swimming or boating. You can, however, bring a canoe for a fee. There are hiking trails and 73 campsites which may be reserved in advance, but the lake is best known for fishing. It is stocked regularly and stays pretty busy for that reason. Rose Canyon is about 7,000 feet above sea level. The entry fee for the lake is $9 per car and camping is $20 per night.
