Dear Heather,
With Valentine’s day quickly approaching, I hear typical comments from my teenage daughter, “Mom, Valentine’s Day is awful! What about all of us who don’t have someone important in our life?”
I have a hard time responding to her with a substantial message.
Any advice?
Heartless Mom
Dear Heartless Mom,
First of all, you aren’t heartless. Sometimes having adequate answers for our children is very difficult.
I would suggest offering a different take on the typical Valentine’s Day. Encourage your daughter to look at the people in her life who are important to her. Remind her that it doesn’t have to be someone that she has romantic feelings for. Friends, loved ones, and teachers would be great recipients of a little valentine to remind them they are loved. Maybe she will even remember that Mom could use a little reminder too!
