To the editor:

It’s no secret that many Pima County roads are in need of repair, and now voters have a chance to help by approving Prop 463 on November 8th. Without raising property taxes, Prop 463 would allow the county to sell bonds to fix roads in our communities. The county has bonds that are expiring, so the tax rate will remain the same. And the new bonds are expected to be paid off in an average of only 3.4 years. In fact, your Pima County primary property tax rate will decrease this year by 40 cents per $100 of valuation – the largest decrease since the 1970s.

The money will go to fix the most deteriorated roads in Pima County. The funds will be distributed to all local communities including Tucson, Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, South Tucson, Vail, Green Valley, Ajo and unincorporated Pima County.

Livable communities rely on a healthy economy and good jobs. Roads and other infrastructure are key considerations that companies use when choosing to do business in a community. Good roads support the goals of livability while protecting the investments that this county has made in our infrastructure. Everyone benefits!

Two independent organizations – the Regional Transportation Authority and the Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee – will monitor and track all funding to insure that all money goes to “Just Fix Our Roads.”

Virtually all major business groups and associations in Pima County support this effort, along with the Pima Fire Chiefs Association and many other health care and emergency services providers. Please join them, and me, in supporting this proposition.
