French author and political theorist, Alexis De Tocqueville, in the 1830’s, the propensity of Americans to develop civic associations, and how these associations strengthened community. Research over the years has shown that when groups join together and respond to a social need, there is a distinct benefit provided to the community. Civic involvement brings significant benefits, financial and otherwise, to a community. In other words, community associations and events provide a universal benefit which benefits the whole community.
One local organization, that has worked to build community (among others) is the Vail Preservation Society. They have worked hard to promote a “Vail Community” and develop Vail’s unique identity. One aspect of their mission is to connect and strengthen the communal bonds in the community. One of the ways they do that is through promoting “A Colossal Fourth” annually, around and including the 4th of July.
This year’s celebration will be held from June 29th to July 4th, and will include a block party, parade, and fireworks. The “four days of fun” will highlight local businesses and special locations in Vail. Accordingly, there will be lots of events, to include star gazing, a petting zoo, Corvette car show, wine tasting, and a block party with food. The festivities will conclude with a parade on the 4th.

Many thanks to the Vail Preservation Society and the various community sponsors and partners that have worked to put this together!
