By Charlotte Herdliska, Corona de Tucson Fire Marshal
In the interest of keeping our community safe, please do NOT throw your yard waste (tree limbs, trimmings, rubbish or just plain garbage) over your back-yard wall, on the side of the roads, out in the desert or in a wash or anywhere other than the garbage can or the dump. This type of debris can and will add fuel to wildfires and cause unnecessary access problems for our firefighters.
This kind of illegal dumping increases flame lengths in the most high risk areas (around homes) as well as the number of flying embers and flaming debris in the air, which in turn increases the chance of these embers landing on something combustible on your porch, yard, or house and causing a fire.
As we work to ensure the community is a safe as possible from the spread of wildfires, we ask your assistance in keeping the area around your homes as free and clear of debris as possible so we can ensure things don’t get out of hand in the Spring when the Desert dries out.
I’ve spoken to a number of residents here in our community and many of them work together to make a dump run several times a month. I myself have used this “ride share” type offer, and it has proven to be very convenient and low in cost.
Don’t forget! Tossing your yard waste into the desert is illegal dumping!
To report illegal dumping:
- Report illegal dumps to PDEQ online or by calling (520) 724-7400 Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm or (520) 622-5800 (24 hours/day).
- Never approach an illegal dumper.
- If you see illegal dumping activity in progress, report it immediately by calling 911. Then call PDEQ with location, license plate number, vehicle description, or other identifying information.
Thank you for your continued support.
