Last month, the nation watched as Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc in Houston. The destruction was fast and furious, and the flooding was unlike anything the region has ever seen. Millions of people rushed to the aid of victims from the hurricane by donating money, hygiene products, and food.
Kimberly Crossland, founder and owner of the Vail-based marketing agency, Savvy Copywriters, felt called to help another group of people who were devastated by Harvey – the local business community in Houston. “I’m a small business owner myself and understand the need to keep the company up and running in all circumstances, so I can keep my employees paid and keep my family fed,” she said. “After putting myself in the shoes of business owners in Houston, my heart ached thinking about how torn these people must be between helping their family, their community, and the people who rely on them to make a living.”
Local business owners in Houston were forced to choose between repairing the destruction of their homes and getting back to work as soon as the clouds cleared and the winds died down. For many, it was difficult to return to work while there was so much to be done. If they did return, it was to clean up their own shops or do as much work as they could to stay on their feet fiscally. That meant that marketing, an essential business task for growth and income generation was put on the back burner. That’s where Savvy Copywriters stepped in to help.
Kimberly Crossland reached out to several contacts in Houston and offered a no-strings-attached, free marketing service. Several people responded graciously and accepted. One business owner in particular said he was “depleted and discouraged” by the aftermath of Harvey, and was excited by the prospect of complimentary services during this time of need. “There was, and still isn’t, any expectation of compensation or pay. This was about fellow business owners coming together to get through a tragedy,” Crossland said.
Kimberly is serving in her fourth year on the Greater Vail Area Chamber of Commerce board and served on several local committees. She volunteers locally and writes occasionally for The Vail Voice. Currently, Kimberly is helping with the development of Vail Connection @ GVACC, which is the new coworking space opening up between the tracks. She works with many local businesses and it has been said that her business, “Savvy Copywriters delivers top notch copy along with business insight and personal attention to detail.” She provides a range of services from website development to content marketing (blogging, specifically), and overall local marketing strategy.
