The 1908 Old Vail Store & Post Office rehabilitation will begin in 2018. This project is key to rekindling the heart of Vail Between the Tracks™ where our community began in 1880. The adobe is the sole remaining pre-statehood building left to tell our early stories. Our 1908 adobe is on the National Register, part of our national story, and connects us to our local heritage. We want every person in Vail to be able to say they were a part of bringing it back to life to serve present and future community needs.
The 1908 Old Vail Store & Post Office will be adaptively re-used to serve as the Vail Connects Welcome & Heritage Center. A community gathering place to get the scoop on local attractions, recreational opportunities, enjoy local art, coffee, music, and great programs, all nestled in an authentically Vail setting. Retaining the repurposed 1908 railroad shipping crate ceiling, the rehabilitation will honor the original repurposing of materials German immigrant Otto Schley used in 1908. Cienega High School Construction Tech and Transition School to Work students will learn preservation trades participating in the rehab. You can too! Watch for community adobe making days in 2018.
