Emily Shrieves is a 16-year-old junior at Empire. She has also just hit 1,000 points total in her high school basketball career, an amazing accomplishment! Emily has been playing since she was five and she said that hitting 1,000 points has always been a goal of hers. Her dad is her coach and the night before a game he came in her room and told her she was 30 points away, “I just thought my dream was coming true,” she recalls in shock. The next day she had a game and she said, “Mid-game I realized I was at 28 points and it was going to happen.”

You could imagine somebody would completely lose composure once they’ve finally accomplished their dream, but not Emily, “I tried to stay poised and stay focused because the win was more important.” That’s a true leader, that’s probably why she has been a captain on the varsity team for the past three years. Despite her successes in basketball, it isn’t her only sport, she also plays softball and she said she would love to go to school for both softball and basketball.

One interesting fact about Emily is the first thing she does when she wakes up is take out her special contact lenses, (Corneal Refractive Therapy), which she wears at night to correct her vision. She is one of the first to try them. But she also loves the simple things, like watching Grey’s Anatomy and having an egg, bacon and sausage quiché for breakfast.

Overall, we know Emily will go on to do great things and we wish her luck in her next goal to reach 2,000 points before her senior season ends next year. She also wants to add that she wants to thank her club coaches, her dad and everyone who came to the game and The Vail Voice for covering her story. Good luck Emily.
