USATF Region 10 Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships Southern Arizona athletes brought home 16 gold medals at the USATF Region 10 Champions in El Paso in early July.

In addition, eight silver standard times and marks were set. Vail Adrenaline Track Club thrower Alyssa Perrini qualified for nationals in three events. Perrini won the javelin throw, took second in the discus and third in the shot put.

Her teammate Hannah Barney qualified in the outdoor pentathlon and the shot put.

“I felt good going into Regionals because Arizona competition is so strong,” Perrini said. “I’m at the bottom of my age group and I just wanted to compete well and qualify for nationals in all three events just like in 2014. I exceeded my expectations in the discus and think that I can do even better in the shot and javelin in Jacksonville.”

Perrini is a Desert Sky eighth grader. The National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships will be held in Jacksonville, Florida from July 27-August 2.
