As the weather cools, another holiday season will sneak up on us faster than an unexpected frost. With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday preparations, it is easy for us to forget about our furry family members. If you have pets, keep them safe from holiday hazards. Starting with Halloween, if you have kids who will be trick or treating and you also have dogs for pets, make sure all that candy is kept out of reach. Chocolate is poisonous for dogs. If they ingest enough of it they can die. So, if your little ones are enjoying their trick or treat candy, make sure they don’t leave any of it within reach of your dog. And, by the way, cats have a sweet tooth. Most canned cat food is full of sugar. Although it is not likely that they will go for the candy, you never know.
At Thanksgiving a few years back my mother was thawing out a 20 lb turkey on the kitchen counter when she went out to run some errands. When she came home she was greeted by her 85 lb greyhound Chang who was lying on the living room floor with a third of the frozen turkey eaten! So, be careful if you want to eat your wonderful holiday meals instead of serving them up unexpectedly to your dog.
I love to decorate for the holidays! It puts me in the mood, especially all the Christmas lights! However, all those decorations can pose a threat to your pet’s safety. Be mindful and take precautions to keep our pets safe from choking on decorations or pulling heavy things like Christmas trees down on them. Make sure your decorations are out of their reach. Make sure your Christmas trees and menorahs are firmly secured in their locations. That way if the cat or dog gets curious or playful while you are away they don’t hurt themselves or knock things over that could become a fire hazard in your home.
With the holidays just around the corner we have so much to be grateful for in our lives, especially the warm and loyal companionship of our furry family members. Let’s keep them safe so they can enjoy many more holidays with us in the years to come. Happy Holidays!
